INDUSTRY CHANGES - GOOD OR BAD
The business environment of talent assessment vendor/partners is continuing to change with mergers, buyouts and internal re-organizations. The impact of these transitions is unknown but could be significant for their clients. As many of us have seen, buyouts put pressure on the acquired company for quick growth in order to justify the investment by the new equity buyers or stockholders. This emphasis on fast sales growth can have significant implications for clients.
Sometimes the result of an acquisition can be a re-organization or change in operating philosophy or style that can be good or bad depending on the client’s perspective and needs. One rumor on the street has a major company with a talent assessment division dropping some of its cloud-based assessment solutions. If this occurs, it will surely surprise many of its clients. It is good business to pay close attention to a vendor partner as they undergo a transition of ownership or reorganization.
My own experience in selling Batrus Hollweg International (BHI) to Kenexa and then its subsequent sale to IBM, has shown that eventually new ownership changes can have a dramatic impact on service, operations and technology. The larger company’s values and operating principles, over time, dominate the smaller company for better or worse.
THE NEXT GENERATION
As some of you know my daughter, Dr. Ashley Hollweg, founded a new talent assessment company when IBM bought out Kenexa over two years ago. Her company, Hollweg Assessment Partners (HAP - www.hollwegpartners.com), is focused on delivering deeply insightful and highly predictive talent evaluations to organizations that are re-emphasizing talent excellence. Ashley is responding to her clients’ need to cascade her type of assessments down throughout their organizations. I had been “on sabbatical” after leaving Kenexa / IBM, and Ashley recruited me to join her at HAP. I now head up the development of new tools and a cloud-based assessment platform to deliver middle-level and entry-level assessments to her clients. I am delighted to announce that we rolled out the HAP Talent GPS platform in January of this year, and it is built to be highly customizable to the culture and values of individual organizations. If your company would like a demonstration of our assessment approach please reach out to us. -Lewis Hollweg, Ph.D.
